Mi Shebeirach Reminder

We say the Mi Shebeirach prayer for healing as a community each Shabbat to send healing to those in need.  To keep our list current, we remove names at the end of each month and ask that congregants notify the temple office if they wish to keep the name of a friend or loved one on the list for the following month. When calling to add or keep someone on the Mi Shebeirach list, please indicate their relationship to you.  As always, during the Mi Shebeirach portion of our service, there will be an opportunity to include additional people in our prayers of healing as the need arises.

Please continue to inform Kol Am’s Caring Committee and/or the temple office of simchas (happy occasions and milestones), illnesses or times of difficulty.

Library News

Thanks to a generous donation from Beth Knight and Reuben Cohen our congregation is now a member of the Jewish Book Council.  As part of our membership, we recently received a shipment of more than 200 newly-published books for our Kol Am Library. Please visit the library any time you are at Kol Am and browse our wonderful collection of books.

The lengthy process of cataloging our entire collection of new and existing books is now complete.  We have expanded our category list to include art , humor, comparative religion, life in general, and health/wellness.  The Language category now includes Hebrew, Yiddish, Russian, German and some books explaining the importance of languages and their impact on the Jewish people.  Our collection of books on Torah, Judaism, holidays, history, music, biographies, autobiographies, poetry, cooking, Israel , and fiction has increased dramatically thanks to the additional books we received from the Jewish Book Council.

Lately the Library Committee has been highlighting some of our newest books by placing them on the lobby table.  To check out any library book, just write down the name of the book, your name and the date you checked it out on the sheet located on the lobby table.  When you are finished with your book, place it on the long table in the library.  With the addition of more 200 new books, there is definitely something for everyone.

Thank you to Jane and Harvey Baker , Kate and Howard Schwadron and Carol and Jeff Solomon for their recent donations of books.  Thank you to Nate Noss , Nina Risdall and Sheri Corman for volunteering their time which made this process go faster.

A BIG THANK YOU to Beth Knight and Reuben Cohen for their generous donation for our membership with the Jewish Book Council and shipping costs, without their support our library would not have the addition of all these wonderful books and to Neal Sokol for informing us about the Jewish Book Council.

Adult Education Programs

Congregation Kol Am offers a variety of formal and informal learning opportunities for adults. Our formal Hebrew and Judaics program for adults meets on Sunday mornings, September 7 through the first Sunday in May.

Hebrew classes meet from 9:00-10:15 a.m. and use an individualized, self-paced curriculum that enables students to learn and progress at their own pace.

Our adult Judaics class meets from 11:15-12:15 p.m. and will study “Mishnah for Lay People.” The class will focus on Pirkei Avot (Ethics/Sayings of the Sages). You don’t need to be a lawyer to understand Mishnah.  Come and learn the practical wisdom of our Sages, lessons that last a lifetime. The cost is $200 for the first adult and just $50 for each additional adult in the same household. The cost is also just $50 for adults who have children enrolled in Hebrew or Religious School .

In addition to our Sunday morning adult learning program, Kol Am offers a variety of informal learning opportunities throughout the year including mini-courses, Torah Breakfasts, Taste of Talmud study sessions, literary and cultural programs, guest speakers, and more.

Watch for announcements of upcoming programs in the Echo and in This Week at Kol Am.

Education Committee News

I hope you all have enjoyed a wonderful summer and now join me in looking forward to another great year of exciting Jewish learning opportunities for children and adults at Kol Am.  Our Kol Am Intergenerational School (KAIS) begins classes on Sunday, September 7.

We are thrilled to welcome back so many of our wonderful teachers from last year, including Becky Cohen, Kimberly White, Ronni Kaminski, Mitch Furman and, of course, Rabbi Séverine.  I extend a big Kol Am welcome to all of our new and returning families.

In addition to our KAIS program on Sunday mornings we will be offering a variety of family and adult learning opportunities throughout the year.  I hope you will take advantage of these wonderful opportunities. Rabbi Séverine works very hard in her capacity as Director of Education to create innovative and meaningful education programs.

As always, we welcome your suggestions and feedback and invite anyone who is interested to join our Education Committee.  I look forward to seeing you all on Sunday, September 7th.

Changes to Yom Kippur Yizkor (Memorial) Service

As in years past, Congregation Kol Am will publish a Yizkor (Memorial) Book for Yom Kippur honoring the memory of loved ones of congregants. As always, you will have the opportunity to make a donation and submit as many names as you wish for inclusion in our Book of Memory. The book will continue to be distributed at our Yom Kippur Yizkor service.

Please note, however, that we have changed our policy regarding the names that are read aloud during the Yizkor service.  Beginning this Yom Kippur, we will read aloud only those names inscribed for a Perpetual Memorial and the names of loved ones who have passed away during the preceding year.

Establishing a Perpetual Memorial

Establishing a Perpetual Memorial at Kol Am is a beautiful way to honor the memory of a cherished loved one with a lasting tribute. Creating a Perpetual Memorial ensures that your loved one will continue to be remembered annually on their Yahrzeit and at Yizkor services at Congregation Kol Am in perpetuity.  Your loved one’s name will also be permanently inscribed on our Perpetual Memorial board in the Kol Am Living Room.  Our immediate goal is to establish 20 new Perpetual Memorials so that we can install the permanent Perpetual Memorial board that was designed for our synagogue (The current Board is a temporary version.)

A minimum donation of $360 is needed for each Perpetual Memorial established.  Donations are tax deductible and payment plans can be arranged.  All donations will be placed in a Perpetual Memorial Tribute Fund and used for maintaining and updating the memorial board. If you would like to establish a Perpetual Memorial in memory of a loved one, please contact the Kol Am office, (636) 519-0082.
